Siobhan Burke is a writer living in New York City. Since 2013 she has been a dance critic for the New York Times and a contributing writer for Dance Magazine. She has written for Artforum, The Brooklyn Rail, Critical Correspondence, Cultured, Harper’s Bazaar, Pointe, Open Space, Our Steps, The Village Voice, and other publications. She was a 2013 USC Annenberg/Getty Arts Journalism Fellow and received a 2018 Creative Capital/Warhol Foundation Arts Writers Grant.
Siobhan’s writing is informed by her background as a dancer. Originally from Northampton, MA, she grew up studying Irish dance in Hartford, CT, and Tralee, County Kerry, Ireland. She shifted her focus to contemporary dance as a student at Barnard College. Between 2005 and 2014, she performed with the North American touring company of Riverdance and with artists including Darrah Carr, Hadley Smith, RoseAnne Spradlin, Jillian Sweeney, Rebecca Warner, and Narcissister. In 2017 she appeared in the work of Yvonne Rainer as part of David Michalek’s film installation Slow Dancing/Trio A.
Siobhan has been an adjunct lecturer in the Barnard College Department of Dance since 2013, teaching Dance Criticism and Dance in New York City. She has been a guest speaker in classes at Cornish College of the Arts, Johns Hopkins University, Mount Holyoke College, New York University, Point Park University, Princeton University, Queens College, University of the Arts, and University at Buffalo, among other institutions.
